“You Can’t Have a Colliery Band Without a Colliery”
With stirring live brass music provided by Chalford Band and plenty of gritty northern humour, this play is moving, very funny and ultimately heartwarming.
This year, Hexagon Theatre Company is celebrating its 25th Birthday, and Chalford Band their 125th. To celebrate their joint birthdays they are bringing you the stage version of the much acclaimed film Brassed Off.
It is the 1990’s and in Grimley, Yorkshire, the livelihood and identity of an entire mining community are threatened by their pit’s closure. A bitter-sweet comedy, Brassed Off revolves around a group of miners passionate about their Brass Band but who have serious decisions to make about whether to vote to keep the pit open or to take the money on offer. Then Gloria, an attractive young woman, returns to her home town and wants to join the band. But what exactly is she doing working for the coal board?
Featuring some familiar faces but also some new members, Brassed Off is directed by Mary Moore and Katy Albiston.
Hexagon Theatre Company have performed a variety of thought-provoking and entertaining plays during the last 25 years, from Educating Rita (their first production) to Antigone and from Plenty to Last Tango in Whitby.
Chalford Band is a flourishing brass band formed in 1885. Recently they won the national title of Pontin’s first section champions. This puts Chalford in the top 200 world rankings.
Performances will take place at the Stroud Subscription Rooms on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th July at 7.30 pm, with a matinee performance on Sunday 25th July at 3.00 pm. Tickets are available from Tourist Information.
